a cinematic grimoire…
a database dedicated to magician and occultist contributions to cinema…
With cinemas 1895 public debut, many stage magicians immediately adopted film as they did the magic lantern as an attraction for their performances. And vice versa, stage magic illusions and Victorian interest in the supernatural created a vital context in the production of special effects and tricks on the screen showing off the medium's possibilities. Since magic and cinema have been intertwined since its inception, my hope is that this website will serve as a database of magical films as well as the Magician & Occultist's contributions to cinema. This page is constructed to list filmmakers who have also worked as stage magicians and filmmakers who can also be considered occultists. It will categorize and list films that portray these ideas and workings and function as ritual themselves.
This page is a work in progress…
Due to the subject's broad nature, I was inspired to make a space where this information was easily accessible for others interested in the topic. As for now, just copy and paste the title you're interested in into your browser, and there should be a plethora of information about the film and where to watch it.
Please Note: there are no content ratings next to the films, so there may be violent/ traumatic or sexually explicit imagery mixed into the lists.
